Melasma

Trusted Care for Your Skin

Dr. Cynthia Abban

Melasma, also referred to as chloasma, occurs when uneven dark patches of skin develop, often on the face or forearms. These dark spots typically appear symmetrically around the forehead, cheeks, nose, or upper lip. The appearance of melasma distinguishes it from other conditions that cause skin hyperpigmentation. Melasma causes include hormonal fluctuations, such as pregnancy and menopause, as well as sun exposure and genetic predisposition. Individuals with darker skin tones are more prone to melasma due to higher melanin production.

At MCS Dermatology in Elk Grove Village, IL, Dr. Cynthia Abban offers advanced melasma treatment options to help reduce its appearance and restore an even skin tone. We proudly serve patients from Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, and the surrounding areas. Contact our office today to learn more.

Melasma Symptoms

Melasma symptoms are characterized by dark patches on the skin, primarily on the face. The three common patterns include:

  • Centrofacial melasma: Hyperpigmentation on the nose, chin, forehead, cheeks, and upper lip.
  • Malar melasma: Dark spots concentrated on the upper cheekbones.
  • Mandibular melasma: Pigmentation following the jawline.

Melasma Treatments

Treatment for eczema rash depends on severity and location. Mild cases can often be managed with over-the-counter creams, including hydrocortisone ointments and antihistamines like Benadryl, to reduce itching and inflammation.

More severe cases may require prescription-strength steroid creams, immunomodulators, or oral corticosteroids. For patients with chronic or resistant eczema, ultraviolet light therapy or laser treatments may be recommended to target affected areas. In severe cases where other treatments fail, immunosuppressants may be prescribed to help control the overactive immune response contributing to eczema flare-ups.
