Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, but when detected early, it is highly treatable. At MCS Dermatology, we believe that education and prevention are the first steps toward saving lives.
What Is Melanoma?
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops in melanocytes—the cells responsible for producing pigment in your skin. While it is less common than other skin cancers, it is far more aggressive and more likely to spread if not caught early.
“Melanoma can develop quickly and may not always look the way people expect,” says Dr. Cynthia Abban. “That’s why regular skin checks—both at home and with a dermatologist—are so important.”
Know the Warning Signs: The ABCDEs of Melanoma
One of the easiest ways to identify a suspicious mole or spot is by using the ABCDE rule:
-
A – Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
-
B – Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges
-
C – Color: Varying colors (tan, brown, black, sometimes white, red, or blue)
-
D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), though melanomas can be smaller
-
E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, or color
“If you notice a mole that looks different from the others or is changing over time, don’t wait—get it checked,” advises Dr. Abban.
Who Is at Risk?
Melanoma can affect anyone, but certain factors increase your risk:
-
Fair skin, light hair, or light eyes
-
History of sunburns or excessive sun exposure
-
Use of tanning beds
-
Family or personal history of skin cancer
-
Having many or unusual moles
Even if you don’t fall into these categories, routine skin exams are still essential.
Prevention Starts with Sun Protection
Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of melanoma.
Dr. Abban recommends:
-
Wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day
-
Reapplying sunscreen every two hours when outdoors
-
Seeking shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM
-
Wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
-
Avoiding tanning beds entirely
“Consistent sun protection isn’t just for the beach—it’s something you should practice every day,” says Dr. Abban.
The Importance of Annual Skin Exams
A professional skin exam can detect early signs of melanoma that you might miss on your own. At MCS Dermatology, we provide thorough, full-body skin checks in a comfortable and supportive environment.
“Early detection truly saves lives,” says Dr. Abban. “A quick annual exam can make all the difference.”
