Skin Lesion Removal

Trusted Care for Your Skin
Dr. Cynthia Abban
When examining your skin, you may notice small growths or areas that look different from the surrounding skin. These are known as skin lesions, which can develop anywhere on the face or body. While most skin lesions are benign (noncancerous), some may become bothersome, painful, or cosmetically unappealing, prompting removal. Additionally, if a lesion changes over time, a biopsy may be necessary to check for cancerous cells. Dr. Cynthia Abban provides expert lesion evaluation and removal at MCS Dermatology in Elk Grove Village, IL, where patients from nearby areas like Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, and Hoffman Estates seek professional care. Most lesions can be removed in one of our treatment rooms with minimal discomfort. Schedule a consultation to have your lesion analyzed or eliminated.
Symptoms
Skin lesions can present in various ways, often differing in color, texture, or size. Identifying these characteristics can help determine whether skin lesion treatment is needed. Symptoms include:
- Color changes: Birthmarks, macules (flat moles or freckles)
- Raised growths: Moles, nodules, papules
- Texture variations: Rashes, hives (wheals), ulcers, crusts, scars, or scales
- Discomfort symptoms: Burning, itching, irritation from friction against clothing or skin
The Process
The best skin excision method depends on the type and location of the lesion. Dr. Abban may recommend surgical excision, which involves cutting out the lesion along with a small amount of surrounding tissue. This approach is commonly used for cysts, moles, or skin lesions that may be cancerous or precancerous. Stitches are typically required, and a healing ointment is applied to aid recovery. The skin generally heals within 1 – 2 weeks. For surface-level skin lesions, a surgical blade may be used to shave the lesion away. Other options include laser treatments, oral medications, or topical treatments to minimize symptoms or improve the lesion's appearance.
