Monitor and Assess Moles
Dr. Abban recommends regular mole checks and self-monitoring for changes in moles on the skin. By following the ABCDE rule, you can identify potential cancerous moles early:
- Asymmetrical: They aren't even or equivalent in dimensions when cut in half.
- Borders: They have scalloped or jagged edges.
- Color: They start to change or have an irregular color.
- Diameter: They're larger than six millimeters in diameter.
- Evolves: They start to evolve (grow or change) in color, shape, size, or height.
Treatments for Moles
Most moles on the skin do not require treatment unless they are cancerous, sore moles, or causing any type of discomfort.
If needed, mole removal can be performed using a surgical excision technique. This involves numbing the area with a local anesthetic and removing the skin mole with a scalpel and a small portion of surrounding tissue. The wound is then closed with sutures.
